Hey, this may seem like a minor detail, but the tarball for s3sync does not contain a top-level directory, it's a tarbomb:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarbomb#Tarbombs.

Perhaps you could consider having an s3sync directory in the tarball to place your files in?
